Annual Auction Rules

The Australian Society of Magicians (ASM) Assembly no.1 hold an annual auction in Melbourne in place of one of the regular monthly meetings. To find which month it is on see our Meetings page.

The Auction is open to all members of the Magic Circle of Victoria Inc, the International Brotherhood of Magicians (IBM) Ring No. 84 and all our friends in the community of magic.

Find all of those old trick/books/videos that you’re not using anymore and turn them into cold hard cash. Even if it’s not old, maybe it’s just not your style – bring it along so that someone else can benefit from it.

We’ve seen some fantastic bargains over the years, as well as some auction finds turn into show-stopping masterpieces – you just never know what’s going to turn up – so it’s better to be prepared in case something catches your eye!

Sellers

There is no limit to the amount of items you can put up for auction, but your items will be auctioned-off 10-lots at a time.  All lots (of one or more items) need to be on a Seller Template with a maximum of 10 items to a page. You will need two copies of each Seller Template page, one for our Auctioneer and one for a Treasurer’s table.

The Seller Template can be found here (this link dowloaded an MS Word document to your device):

If you have more than 10 lots (a lot can be one or more individual items) you will need multiple Seller Tempaltes. Your second / third / fourth sheets will be auctioned off at different times throughout the night.

One Each Seller Template sheet write or type clearly:

  • Your name
  • Lot number
  • Description of the items in the lot
  • Reserve price
  • (Sol price is filled out by the Auctioneer after the bidding is complete)

Unless the lot is particularly valuable, we don’t recommend reserve prices. There will likely be plenty of eager bidders to get things going.  If you must set a reserve, please make it a reasonable figure that you would accept for the item.

10% of the total proceeds from the sale of your items (in dollars) will be donated to the ASM.

You will be paid for any sold lots at the end of the night (minus the 10%), at the conclusion of the auction. Sellers can only be paid once the buyers have paid for the items – which also happens at the end of the night.

Buyers

Collect a bidder number at the door from the Treasurer’s table at the entry if you are intending to bid, so that we can identify each winner. The Auctioneer’s decision is final. It is your responsibility to ensure the Auctioneer hears and sees your bid.

Payment for items can only be made in cash after the end of the auction. Please bring a variety of notes – not just a stack of “pineapples” (that is $50 Austrlian notes for those flyiing-in from overseas!) All items must be paid for, before your items can be taken.
